Chris Flexen (29, Seattle Mariners) played for the New York Mets from 2017-2019 before joining the Doosan Bears of the KBO in 2020. He went 8-4 with a 3.01 ERA in 21 games before moving back to the major leagues. He signed a 2+1 year, $12.75 million contract with Seattle.
The +1 year is triggered if he totals 300 innings in the first two years. Flexen has pitched 317.1 innings over the past two years and is guaranteed the final season of his contract. He went 14-6 with a 3.61 ERA in 31 games in 2021 and 8-9 with a 3.73 ERA in 33 games in 2022.
However, his pre-free agency season was a disaster. In 10 games, he went 4-0 with a 6.44 ERA. It’s his worst start since joining Seattle. With Robbie Ray, George Kirby, Luis Castillo, and Logan Gilbert in the lineup, it’s hard to see him winning a full-time job. In his four starts, he was terrible: 4-0 with a 10.38 ERA. However, since returning to the bullpen, he hasn’t allowed a run in five straight games. Eight innings of six-hit ball, seven strikeouts, one walk, and no runs allowed. Notably, he didn’t walk a single batter in four games in May.
In May, he had a zero ERA in four games. On May 18, he pitched three scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox, striking out one, and on May 23, he pitched one scoreless inning against the Oakland Athletics, striking out two. In the top of the ninth inning with an 11-2 lead, he induced Jayson Peterson to fly out to shortstop on a 91-mph fastball. He mixed in a changeup and cutter before getting Shay Wrangellis to swing at a 92 mph fastball. He got Tony Kemp to ground out to short on a slider to end the game. It took him 12 pitches to get through the first inning.
Shows a lot of poise after moving back to relief, but he needs to be able to make a starting pitching comeback to make an impact. Regardless, it’s shocking that the team hasn’t won a game two months into the season. The trade rumors that were circulating in the local media before the season seem to have subsided.
